A defined set of brand guidelines was a top priority project for Apollo Robotics Technology's newest business, Trueview AR.

In 2019, The core team was ready to execute a new business strategy – Providing Augmented Reality solutions for the Jewelry Industry. The team has observed the branding pains in two other start-ups and wanted to have a smoother and successful launch.

“Let's do it the right way.”

Ning Jiang, CTO of Trueview AR

We were underway with the user dashboard wire flows and wireframes. My team prioritized my efforts into focusing on the UX and interactions at this stage rather than thinking about the Trueview AR brand guidelines. However, they realized without completed guidelines; it would block the development of the user dashboards. I could do both simultaneously but my team didn't want to burn me out, disrupt my flow or delay the launch, so we set aside some budget and reached out for help.

Being an Augmented Reality business for the jewelry industry –

“I sought a designer who could complement my design aesthetics and taste. I preferred a designer with a softer, feminine touch for Trueview AR's brand development.”

Scottie

We were sourcing both Fiverr and local connections, and due to project availability, we went with a recommended local designer.

After the third week, I ended the contract with the local designer and took another chance with Fiverr. Fortunately, some additional designers became available, and I selected Mijal after my team had an opportunity to review her work and client testimonials.

Our Goal

The target was to produce a set brand guidelines before designing additional services for Trueview AR. The company trusted me to produce a framework for the business to stand upon.

Action

I owned and managed the entire brand guieline process. I strategized a plan, hired a designer, fired a designer, created and maintained the guidelines.

My Process

In the naming, we kept the word “True” since data collection in the user dashboards was one of the original services. It also aligned nicely with its sister business from a strategic naming standpoint – Trueform.io, a local online retailer featuring the latest tech gadgets.

Trueview AR logo iterations and techniques

Here’s the evolution snapshot of the logo process I created in Illustrator. Jojo and I shared concepts to Ning and Cortney. I iterated on the selected combo marks for Trueview AR. We selected a lilac color from our sister business, trueform.io brand guidelines as a color placeholder.

Using Adobe Color to harvest Lilac

I used Adobe Color to fine-tuned the lilac and coral swatches. I sent these selects back to Mijal’s team to incorporate. In return, her team provided 2 illustrator brand guidelines to consider. Mijal’s guidelines consisted of the logo, typography, misuse, color palette, and digital examples.

Using Adobe Color to rock with Coral

Cortney, Ning, and I liked the addition of Coral's (which was also Pantone 2019 Color of the year) and adopted it as another primary color for Trueview AR.

Results

I took the baseline that Mijal created and extended it with an Overview, Identity & Tone, Logo Alternatives, Typography Scaling, Color Shades, and gradients. I also appended a supporting elements section consisting of UI spacing system, elevation system, marketing images, signage, print collateral, interactive logos, and YouTube video page – expanding it to a 30 page, comprehensive pdf download.

Trueview AR Guidelines All Up

Trueview AR overview, identity and tone

The jewelry business prides itself on the storytelling of their jewelry pieces. As a nod to the jewelry industry, providing an overview of Trueview AR's brand story, voice, tone, and who we are – gave our audience an understanding and solidified the trust between the parties.

Trueview AR Logomark and Safe Zones

We provided guidance for the primary logo, white logotype, logo alternatives, misuse, the logomark, and safe zones to ensure legibility around the logo and symbol.

Typography Page, Trueview AR Brand Guidelines

I specifically sought a sans serif font for the UI but wanted a serif paring that represented retail elegance. I settled on Work Sans.

“I believe design decisions are inclusive,
not just a reflection by creatives
but for every decision-maker.”

Scottie

While I was pages deep with Jeremiah Shoaf's Typewolf Work Sans pairings, Ning recommended Cormorant Garamond. I had some other selects, but his selection satisfied my taste, and we adopted as a pairing. I try to sprinkle it in as subtle accents within the design system.

A typography size guide has provided consistency within the Trueview AR design language. I leveraged Refactoring UI's handcrafted scales for typography guidance across various design experiences. I agree that there's more control over selected sizes compared to computing it with a mathematical formula. The sizing has reduced errors and eliminated doubt for all layouts across multiple form factors.

Prisms of light and various jewelry stones inspired the color values.

Having established shades removed the trivial design decisions across multiple form factors in print and digital experiences. Defined color gradients allowed for secondary and tertiary samples to represent different feelings.

Spacing and Elevation Systems, Trueview AR Brand Guidelines

Once again, I leveraged Refactoring UI's spacing system to remove any trivial design decisions by the product and engineering teams.

“Clean, UI Design comes down to established math measurements. Taking great care with it will result in pleasant aesthetics within the negative spacing of a design.”

Scottie

I incorporated Material-UI elevation system since Ning, and I decided React was an appropriate JavaScript library for building out UI components in general. Why reinvent the system when we can leverage what's working effectively. Again, this influenced the subtle interactions across Trueview AR's service and products.

My Impression

Trueview AR's senior leadership finally understood the value of established brand guidelines. It allowed the Trueview AR team to move faster and fully focus on their technologies. I’ve witnessed the rise in confidence of my sales team, investor, current partnerships, and prospective customers. The guidelines provided Trueview AR with an identity which revealed across –

My Learning
Scottie pitching to a perspective jewelry customer

This case study validates all of the best design practices and principles that I have learned in my humble career. When business discussions cause to doubt the brand, I reminded the team about the guidelines. I'm not combative about it, but it justifies my design thinking for the Trueview AR brand.

Looking back, I learned about not rushing the hiring process when bringing on a future designer. It’s essential to have them do exercises that are related to the role, take the current work and taking it up to 100 in order to get a better feel before hiring them. From now on, I’ll keep an eye out for passion, proficiency and determine if I can trust them.

Trueview AR Leadership Team

My favorite takeaway is what the Trueview AR team have developed together. The business has grown from a concept into reality. I'm proud of my contributions and my lasting impression I provided. Will these guidelines be timeless? Only time will tell.
